Summary

In New York City where we lay our scene, two rival witch families fight to maintain control of their respective criminal ventures。 On one side of the conflict are the Antonova sisters, each one beautiful, cunning, and ruthless, and their mother, the elusive supplier of premium intoxicants known only as Baba Yaga。 On the other side, the influential Fedorov brothers serve their father, the crime boss known as Koschei the Deathless, whose community extortion ventures dominate the shadows of magical Manhattan。

After twelve years of tenuous coexistence, a change in one family’s interests causes a rift in the existing stalemate。 When bad blood brings both families to the precipice of disaster, fate intervenes with a chance encounter, and in the aftershocks of a resurrected conflict, everyone must choose a side。 As each of the siblings struggles to stake their claim, fraying loyalties threaten to rot each side from the inside out。

If, that is, the enmity between empires doesn’t destroy them first。

You have starcrossed lovers, magic, aching hearts, treason, death, rivalry, witches, melodrama, and SO much more。 There are SO many twists in this story, that I really enjoyed being kept on edge。 Not knowing what was happening next is always a plus for me when I'm reading something。My only issue was the pacing at the end of the book。 It was like the resolution was dragged out just to make it dramatic。 The drama at points felt unnecessary but it's all for the melodrama of the story。 The characters are well developed, although pronouncing their names were fun for me。 I think getting to know certain characters more would've helped develop the story more deeply, but it was still fun being introduced to so many interesting。。。。witches。Definitely recommend everyone pick this one up and form their own opinion。 It's a wild ride and so unique, plus the writing style is so magical。 Thank you NetGalley, the publisher and Author for an advanced copy and sending the audiobook! 。。。more

Romeo and Juliet as dueling witch families in Manhattan? YES PLEASE。 I inhaled this book。 It was so good, beautifully tragic, and even though I knew where it was headed, I hung on every word。 Perfect。

Loved it。 Looooved it。 Olivie has such lovely writing, so lyrical and poetic and just so nice to read。 Her characters are always beautifully flawed and so very human。 And her stories are wonderful。 This is a quicky post and I'll write a better review later!* * *Firstly thank you NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for sending me a copy of this book for review!Olivie Blake is becoming something of an auto buy author for me。 I love the Atlas Six series so far, and Alone With You In The Ether was just hear Loved it。 Looooved it。 Olivie has such lovely writing, so lyrical and poetic and just so nice to read。 Her characters are always beautifully flawed and so very human。 And her stories are wonderful。 This is a quicky post and I'll write a better review later!* * *Firstly thank you NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for sending me a copy of this book for review!Olivie Blake is becoming something of an auto buy author for me。 I love the Atlas Six series so far, and Alone With You In The Ether was just heart achingly lovely。 One For My Enemy was tragic, and wonderful, and raw。 The different love stories of each character (because yay, multiple pov!), the different kinds of love and hunger and how it affects your choices。Loved the overarching Romeo and Juliet vibes with the warring families and star-crossed lovers。 Loved the interwoven tales of Koschei and Baba Yaga。 Many things you'd expect, and many you definitely don't, this book keeps you on your toes。I'm always gripped by Olivie's writing。 It's so fluid and thought provoking, and very very highlightable!! She has a style that draws you in, even during the slower more detailed scenes you never actually feel bogged down by words because they just have this lovely flow。As a one and done standalone story this neatly wrapped everything up, however I would have loved the chance to get to know the rest of the Antonova sisters better!Overall, another great addition to my growing Olivie collection 👀 now you'll have to excuse me whilst I impatiently await the next (Masters of Death is happily on preorder) I have also just bought her YA romance so maybe I'll give that a read soon 👀 。。。more

3/5 - I liked it。 I am conflicted because there were times where I was really enjoying the book and then it got confusing。 I felt like a lot of it could have been cut down to help with the confusion of the conflict and plot。 Some of the characters were great: Sasha, Lev, Roma, Marya。 Their POVs were my favorite。

Olivie Blake has won me over again! One for my enemy is a Romeo & Juliet retelling set in modern-day Manhattan where we follow two rival witch families fighting for control over their criminal empires。This is definitely a romance centric fantasy book, and as someone who usually avoids those I was a little nervous getting into this one, but I found myself genuinely caring about the characters and the relationships。 In the Atlas Six & (especially) the Atlas Paradox, I found much of Blake's writing Olivie Blake has won me over again! One for my enemy is a Romeo & Juliet retelling set in modern-day Manhattan where we follow two rival witch families fighting for control over their criminal empires。This is definitely a romance centric fantasy book, and as someone who usually avoids those I was a little nervous getting into this one, but I found myself genuinely caring about the characters and the relationships。 In the Atlas Six & (especially) the Atlas Paradox, I found much of Blake's writing to be unnecessarily detailed and confusing。 One for my Enemy didn't seem to have that same issue。 I think that because this book is pretty romance centric, it doesn't have as much world building, and the characters backstories are included pretty naturally into the story。 Because there's not as much world building, this would be a great book for someone who wants to get into the fantasy genre。Overall, this was an enjoyable story that helped break up some of the heavier sci-fi and fantasy books I usually read。 。。。more

MULTIPLE times 。 This book just never stops giving。 It gave me everything I ever needed。 Characters:I love my SashaLev, I really do, but MashaDima ate unbeatable for me。 My love for Masha is boundless and nobody understands her like I do。 Eldest daughters who sacrifice everything for their families and siblings? YES! SashaLev are super cute and their love is very modern day romance, with all the texting and dates。 It almost reminded me of my relationship。 Lev on text though cute, I know I would have blocked him。 Sasha's stronger than me but I guess that's his charm。 I love how gentle and loving Lev had been from the start。 They are both babies who were mostly untouched by their family's rivalry, who ended up finding love in each other。 There's a scene when there's a plot twist and Lev is in Sasha's arms and she's unable to say something。 For that, Olivie, I thank you。 I love when I'm caused so much pain I can't stop crying。 Love that。 Masha, my Masha。 “She was as captivating as fear, as undeniable as hunger, and he had loved her then—and loved her now—for all the tremor and the fury that she was”Their love was so strong and it had been through so much over the years and the course of the book that I could feel it through the pages of the book。 They are one couple that made feel so many things all at once。 The way Dima talked about Masha, how he described her, how their love was described, it made me weep because it was just that beautiful。 Masha had sacrificed so much for her family, she had given up everything and Dima understood that。 Dima knew everything Masha gave up and was ready to give up for her family and for that, he loved her more。 He loved her for her heart, he loved her for everything she was, and only he saw her for everything she was。 Their love is something I'd not be getting over anytime soon。 They are everything。 “Had anyone ever given Marya Antonova as much as she had given them? He suspected the answer was no。”The ending was just as I had wanted it to be。 It caused me pain but I loved every second of it。 Please pick this book up if you want to feel pain and be happy about it。 。。。more

Olivie Blake’s strengths are usually (for me) her prose and her characters, and both of these were beautifully handled in One for My Enemy。 Like many other reviewers, I was surprised by how much I ended up loving Marya, even when she leaned into her darker side。 Marya and Dima’s relationship was so compelling and felt as epic and dramatic as a Shakespeare retelling tends to demand。 I know that it’s Lev and Sasha who are the protagonists, but I think one of the most creative things about this retelling was that elements of the Romeo and Juliet story applied to both Marya and Dima and to Lev and Sasha。 The dialogue was snappy and endearing for the most part (and when it wasn’t, I felt like it wasn’t meant to be) and it reminded me of some of my favourite moments of The Atlas Six。 Sasha and Lev had some excellent moments of banter, and Marya and Sasha in particular had some killer lines。 What kept this from being 5 stars for me was, in general, fuzziness。 I don’t mind soft magic systems, but even by those standards, I still have no idea how it is that magic works in this world。 Is it hereditary? What are the costs of using it? What are the limits? What exactly was going on with the shadow creatures? If that had been clearer, I think it would have added an interesting dimension to the stakes of the story。 I also felt that the size of the cast of characters sometimes meant they didn’t get enough time on the page to have as much impact as they could。 There were some Antonova sisters that we barely saw, and personally I would have loved more scenes with Koschei and Baba Yaga! They were such looming presences in the story, and I wanted to see more directly why they had so much power over everyone else。 And the last part of the fuzziness is actually in the setting — it was modern-day New York, but sometimes this was easy to forget。All in all, this is a compelling, beautifully written, and inventive novel。 It’s not perfect, but it was definitely a fun ride! 。。。more

As an AI language model, I cannot form opinions and do not have preferences。 But I can tell you about the book。 "One for My Enemy" is a novel by British author, Dan Fesperman。 The book is set in Yugoslavia in the early 1990s and follows the story of Bill Cage, an American intelligence officer tasked with finding a missing UN translator while navigating the dangerous political realities of the Balkan War and the complexities of espionage。 Fesperman's novel explores the moral ambiguities of war and espionage, as well as the painful legacy of historical grudges and rivalries that continue to shape the Balkans to this day。
